Do you ever struggle with getting overwhelmed?
Do you ever struggle with having a million things on your plate?
ONE MILLION things that you need to get done and you just don't know how the hell it's all gonna happen?!...and you get so stressed out! Panicked!
It’s like a pinball machine in your mind. You ever been that way?!
I was like that, especially when I was in a spot where I didn't know how to manage it. I remember I would have all these lists of things that I needed to do, and I only had a certain amount of time left in the day. And I remember I would desperately try to get as much done as I could.
So, I'd go through and I do all the little things just to check off boxes (to feel a little bit better) and I would find that even at the end of the day, I still wasn't fulfilled. Even if I got the whole to-do list done…I still wasn't fulfilled! I was just always overwhelmed and always stressed.
So, first- What is overwhelm?
It's this feeling of you not believing that you will have the ability to change something, right?!
You DO have the ability to handle what's thrown at you!
So please understand something first and foremost (before I show you how I overcame it), please understand that whatever comes at you is never greater than what's within you!
Whatever is put on your plate- YOU CAN HANDLE IT! There IS a way to make it happen. There IS a way to get it through. There IS a way to finish all the tasks and all the things that you need to get done!
So how do we solve overwhelm forever? How do we make it go away? How do we make overwhelm not actually be a thing in your life?!
It's really, really, REALLY simple!
If you are overwhelmed, it means one thing... it means you haven't picked a priority.
That's what overwhelm is. It means you haven't picked a priority, but NOW you're going to!... “But everything is a priority…everything needs to get done!”
No! Everything might be important (that might be true), but only ONE thing is a priority because if everything's a priority, then what?
Nothing is a priority!
An example of this: One of my friends, her boss was giving her a million things that needed to get done. This is top priority, right? And I'm sitting there going “Well, of everything- What do you need to get done first?” She says… “It ALL needs to get done!” Can you imagine how overwhelmed that person is?! Extremely! Overwhelmed because they don't have direction. And you know what?!
Overwhelm will VANISH the second you choose the top priority in this situation.
It's that simple!
So, when you take a look now, one of the best ways to do this first and foremost is to ask yourself…
“What's the outcome I want today?”
Because if we try to set a list without having direction- The vision we WANT, we end up getting super stressed out. So, STEP ONE in overcoming overwhelm is “What do I actually want out of today?!” “What's the result I'm looking and why is that so important to me?” “What's the result I want?” “Why is it so important to me?”
When you ask that question, you actually get a CONCRETE answer! NOW you have a target! Something to go towards!
Once that is done…STEP TWO is to literally just brain dump everything that you have in your mind.
Going a million miles an hour up until now is like a pinball machine. That's what I did! I brain dumped everything and got it all onto a sheet of paper and there were a million things and then I asked myself after that was on the piece of paper, I asked myself…
“Okay, what are the top 20% of the things on this list that will get me closer to that outcome, that result that I want?” I circled the top 20% and let's say I chose five items.
Next, I would take a look at those five and I put them in order of priority. What is ACTUALLY the number one priority? What's the most important thing that will get me to that result I want today?!
That’s my number ONE!
What's my number two? Number three? Number four? Number five? And I go in order and then I would take massive action on the first one.
Most people get overwhelmed on a day-to-day basis because they spend their time focusing on items #26, #27, #28, #29 just to feel better. And they mistake movement for achievement. They mistake movement for achievement because they think by checking off a couple of boxes on their to-do list, they're actually being productive…
It doesn't work that way! If you want to make progress towards your dreams, you have to take care of the most important thing first.
And how do you know what the most important thing is? It's probably the thing that you want to avoid the most! That's probably the number one thing on your list. It's probably the thing you want to avoid the most because that's the thing that's going to cause the most fear.
You've been emotionally afraid of doing it, but if you do number one first, what happens? You increase your energy because you feel proud of yourself! So, you get through number two faster…then you get through number three even faster… number four faster…all the way until it’s ALL done!
And you end up getting way more done in two, three hours than you did in two, three days before!
But what happens if you do it the other way?! If you go through and do items, seven, six, five… what happens?
By the time you get to number one, you're drained!
You don't have any more energy to get number one on your list done because you spent your time + energy doing all the things that weren't important. You spent your time doing things that demanded your attention, but weren’t important and deep in the back of your mind… you knew you weren't actually being productive (even though you told yourself a story that you were!)
It's so important that we switch that because then you don’t do that THING, that ONE thing that moves the needle. You procrastinate otherwise. So, we need to flip it! We need to prioritize. Number one, pick that top priority. When that top priority is picked, act on that and overwhelmed will vanish!
Then you're going to feel a sense of progress and progress equals happiness. You're gonna feel fulfilled!
You might not be at the goal yet… but you'll feel so much better than when you were before. So, if you do this, overwhelm will vanish instantly. It'll go away and you'll feel so much more peace. And by the way, this whole practice that I talked to you about over the last 10 minutes, this whole practice of doing this will take two minutes… two minutes!
If you don't have two minutes to overcome overwhelm… You don't have a life. You HAVE to take time to prep your mind for the direction it wants to go because your mind will move in the direction of it’s currently dominant thoughts.
If your mind is overwhelmed on a constant basis and that's what you focus on, you're going to be MORE overwhelmed. But if you give your mind direction, overwhelm vanishes and you feel so much more fulfilled!

“Okay, I can beat overwhelm! I have what it takes. All I have to do is prioritize my day and do the number one thing first and overwhelm will vanish!”
