Personal development paralysis- something every achiever has gone through in some way, shape, or form.

Let me start with a story… I used to be part of a mastermind group a couple years ago and it was a bunch of guys that were chatting about what we were each building. This one guy in our group, he had read so many books, while achieving these big goals + having a family.

He had a belief that knowledge is power.

Is that true? I would argue that knowledge is potential power.

It does not become power unless it is acted upon.

So, every time we would get back together for the mastermind sessions, we would talk about what we were working on and I noticed the guy that consumed so much personal development content was always in the same holding pattern. He was always weighing the pros and cons of each decision he was making (but this went on for years).

If you keep learning every day and you don’t act on what you learn, you will never master anything. He was in the same spot, always weighing the pros and cons, never quite acting and taking a leap of faith. He wanted to play it safe.

Will you ever be ready to go after a big goal or a big dream?

Will you ever be comfortable if you’re going to change your life?

Absolutely not!

Achievement is going to feel very challenging because it requires setting aside the idea that you need to be safe. It requires you taking a leap of faith into the unknown and growing and changing. Learning is incredibly important. You have to do it. You will not succeed if you don't do it. If you don't flood your mind with incredible things, but you also need to apply it, or the learning means nothing.

“The graveyard is the richest place on Earth because it is here that you will find all the hopes and dreams that were never fulfilled, the books that were never written, the songs that were never sung, the inventions that were never shared, the cures that were never discovered, all because someone was too afraid to take that first step, keep with the problem, or determined to carry out their dream.”

 – Les Brown

A mediocre idea acted upon with intensity is far superior than an excellent idea that is never acted on.

Learning means nothing if you don’t apply it.

So, maybe instead of reading 52 books in a year, shoot for half that and instead put together actionable steps after you finish each book! Apply them and THEN start the next book.

If your goal is completion (finish the book, finish the course), then you’re missing the whole point. Go for depth instead! Use an application mindset and then see what happens!

If you are working toward completion, then you have a perfectionist mindset (and ‘perfect’ isn’t achievable, so to be a successful entrepreneur, you need to drop this mindset NOW).

Instead, go for excellence. Excellence requires learning AND applying what you learn.

Excellence means you apply what you learn, get feedback, apply the feedback, and then try again. All of which requires action.

If you have a perfectionist mindset, then you're already setting yourself up for failure. Perfectionism is childish. We need to let go of that right now, go for excellence and outstanding. I'd rather you put something out there (and simply try) then never actually produce anything because it isn’t ‘perfect’.

If you read an entire personal development book, that’s great! If you read only one chapter of the book and actually apply it… that’s better and if you apply what you learned consistently, that’s excellence! Beware of consuming too much personal development and business strategy content as well, because that can be just as paralyzing. Simply find one actionable step and apply it consistently, then consume more knowledge. THAT is how knowledge is power.
