This idea of slowing down to speed up has been a huge theme of my life lately. I am the person that when I want success (or anything really), I want it to happen now.
I am not the guy to sit and wait and reflect and think about something. But lately, I've been learning in my life that a huge key to success (this is coming with maturity over the course of time) is actually slowing down which will allow me to speed up. This allows me to calculate my moves a little bit better, which really comes down to presence.
I want you to think about a time that you have stressed over a decision. This stress is basically fear of the past (repeating itself) or the future (and the unknown). That’s it! Because honestly… you’re not being present anytime you're stressed. Think about it… stress = fear.
Does a fearful state cause your life to grow and thrive? Absolutely not! There might be money challenges or spousal challenges or business challenges, but regardless of what the challenge is… if you're not present through that challenge, you're letting fear dictate how you handle the challenge. What do we do when we have a problem in our life that hits us and it's emotionally challenging? We link a memory in our mind to the challenging emotions that we’re currently feeling.
The mistake we make is that we are trying to create something new from mindsets of the past.
We are literally living in the past and trying to create a future from that. That will never get us to where we want to go!
If you think about any time when you have been in a good flow…
… rocking
… moving
… shaking
… grooving
… and crushing it, that means you were present!
Think about any time you are not having a good time in life. Is it because you aren’t living in the moment? Absolutely! It’s such a cliche ‘live in the moment’, but it’s true! Be present instead of bringing the past to the present (and ultimately the future).
Think about your business. If you have a lack of presence in your business (because you're worried that your business isn’t growing), will you be able to grow your business in the right way? Absolutely not! Why?!
You are not going to be in a creative mindset if you are worried and fearful!
You are not going to tap into your full potential if you are worried and fearful!
People (your customers, employees) are going to feel that fear and worry. They will know when you aren’t living in the present movement. Their BS meter will be so high!
A lot of people say “My spouse doesn't support me in my business.” No, you're just bringing fears of the past or the future to your spouse. If you’re not present with your spouse. If all they see is you on the go go go go go… how does that make them feel?!
When you are constantly on your phone?? You aren’t present!
What about your kids?!
Do they see a pissy parent after work?? Or you constantly on your phone or laptop??
“Daddy, play with me!” “Mommy, read me a book!”
What if instead, you were PRESENT. When you got done with work and you were ALIVE with them and ecstatic to see them?! What if you picked them up and spun them around the room and gave your spouse a BIG hug and kiss?!
What then? Will your children and spouse support you and your business? If they see it makes you joyful and happy?! OH YES, THEY WILL!! They will be your biggest fans!
So, how do we do this? How do we live in the present?
1) Take care of your mind!
Then you will come back refreshed and a refreshed mind is an excited + creative mind!
2) Stop living in the past, but do take time to reflect back.
Try intentional reflection time where you look back to the past with a grateful heart.
(This is something I’ve been doing lately.) Take time to look back on your day, week, month, and year.
Then look forward and ask how you want tomorrow to be like? Where can you do better and what are you excited for?
Take the time to slow down! As they say, “The days are long, but the years are short.”
So, I hope you choose to apply this today! When you do, you will feel alive + fulfilled.
